Setting GOALS... YES! NOW is the time!
Goal setting is everywhere. We set goals for our careers, our health, our lives! It does seem that these days society is always encouraging us to think about the next milestone. However, what we don't always think about is how to actually accomplish your goals. Well this is what this newsletter and the next is about! NOW is the time! Whether personal or professional goals, the following newsletters will hopefully help explain what you need to know. Don’t wait until the new year, NOW is the time to get cracking! So, what is Goal Setting? Goal goal setting is described as the act of selecting a target or objective you wish to achieve. Ok, fair enough, that makes sense. However there is a much more to think about regarding setting goals. Most goal setting exercises start with questions like “What does success look like to you? What do you want to achieve? and when?” If we are serious about achieving our goals, which I’m sure you are! Heck! You should be! We should start with a much different question. You ready for this…? Rather than considering what kind of success we want, we should actually ask ourselves, “What kind of pain do I want?” I guess not what you were expecting right? Well having a goal is the easy part. Who wouldn’t want to write a best-selling book, lose weight, get fit, have a successful business or earn more money? The real challenge is not trying to determine if you want the result, BUT if you are willing to accept the sacrifices required to achieve that result. Do you want the lifestyle that comes with your quest? Are you prepared for the boring and sometimes ugly process that comes before the exciting and glamorous outcome? Let’s face it, it’s pretty easy to sit around and think about what we could do or what we’d like to do. However, it’s an entirely different thing to accept the trade-offs that come with our goals. Everybody wants a gold medal, but very few people want to train like an Olympian. So, goal setting is not only about choosing the rewards you want to enjoy, but also the costs you are willing to pay. How do you row a boat? Imagine a small row boat, with oars. Well your goals are like the rudder on the boat. They set the direction and determine where you go. If you commit to one goal, then the rudder stays on track and you continue moving forward. If you flutter between goals, then the rudder moves around and you find yourself rowing in circles. BUT, there is another part of the boat that is even more important than the rudder: The oars! If the rudder is your goal, then the oars are your process for achieving. While the rudder determines your direction, it's the oars that determine your progress. So, goals determine your direction and systems determine your progress. You’ll never get anywhere just by holding the rudder. You actually have to row! So in conclusion, it’s in the DOING that we see results, not the hoping, wishing and praying. Next month we will give you a few helpful tips on how to set goals you will actually follow! Any questions? We would love to hear from you! Have an excellent November!
